Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital awarded $136,000 from Kohl's Department Stores

NEW HAVEN — Kohl's Department Stores awarded $136,803 to Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital(YNHCH)to continue the "Caring Parents Make Healthy Families" campaign initially launched in 2006. The grant will allow outreach and parenting initiatives of the Caring Parents program which is designed to promote parent education and support.

At the ceremony, Marna P. Borgstrom, Yale-New Haven Hospital president and CEO, thanked Kohl's for its long-term and generous relationship with the Children's Hospital. "Kohl's has been a wonderful partner and has supported the Children's Hospital, its patients and families in numerous ways in recent years," said Borgstrom. "This wonderful gift will help us continue to develop and enhance parental support programs that will not only benefit children but parents, caregivers and families in greater New Haven and throughout the state."

"At Kohl's, we look for ways to give back to our communities," said Carl Keating, district manager, Kohl's, which has 17 stores in Connecticut. "We are happy to have this partnership with Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital because we know these dollars are supporting very worthwhile projects and initiatives that benefit children and families."

To date, Kohl's has donated more than $800,000 to Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital through the Kohl's Cares for Kids program. In January, 2006, Kohl's donated more than $154,000 to the Children's Hospital to launch the Caring Parents campaign.

Through increased public awareness, the campaign's goal is to ensure that Connecticut's children are safe, healthy and growing strong. The hospital works through pediatricians, community organizations, schools and health fairs to reach Connecticut parents.

The check presentation was made at the offices of STRIVE New Haven, the local arm of a national social service organization whose mission is to help people overcome significant barriers to employment to achieve economic independence through work. Many of STRIVE's clients have expressed a need for parenting support and skills training.

Through the Kohl's Cares for Kids program, Kohl's stores across the country sell special merchandise and donate 100 percent of the net profits to programs that benefit children's health and education opportunities in Kohl's markets. Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital is one of those beneficiaries.

Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital, with 201 of Yale-New Haven’s 944 beds, offers the region’s largest and most comprehensive array of maternity and pediatric services, including newborn special care and maternal special care units, a 19-bed pediatric intensive care unit, 24-hour pediatric emergency room, pediatric surgery center and a pediatric clinical research unit.
