Hospital, Turner Construction offer program for minority contractors

NEW HAVEN — Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH), together with Turner Construction Company in Milford, has sponsored an eight-session construction management training program for 14 New Haven minority and women business enterprises.

The recently concluded program offered participants technical, administrative and managerial tools to pursue construction work in both the private and public sectors.

“For the most part, these are people are the first in their families to have started a business, and they need this sort of training,” said Bill Mahoney, administrative director/owners representative for the YNHH Cancer Hospital. “This is information they can use in the everyday life of their businesses, and it will help them bid jobs with large construction management firms.”

The 14 participants included business people in a variety of related fields including specialty metals, painting and small scale construction management. The course, conducted by Turner employees and outside speakers such as attorneys and finanicial experts, provided training in marketing, financial management, insurance and basic estimating.

A final session focused on safety and ended with CPR training and first aid.

Yale-New Haven Hospital is a 944-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving as the primary teaching hospital for the Yale School of Medicine. Yale-New Haven was founded as the fourth voluntary hospital in the U.S. in 1826 and today, the hospital complex includes Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, with a combined medical staff of about 2,400 university and community physicians practicing in more than 100 specialties.
