Child magazine names Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital among the best in the country

Child magazineNEW HAVENChild magazine has recognized Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital (YNHCH) as the top children’s hospital in the state and among the best in the nation according to a highly competitive national survey published in the magazine’s February issue. YNHCH was one of only two hospitals in the New York metropolitan area, and one of only three in New England, to be included on Child magazine’s “Best Children’s Hospitals” list.

A comprehensive 247-question survey, guided by leading pediatric experts, examined vital medical information including, survival rates; the number of complex procedures and intricate surgeries conducted; national support for clinical research studies; efforts to reduce medical errors; and the quality and training of the doctors and nurses – as well as child-friendliness, support for families, and community involvement. To be considered for the Child magazine survey, a hospital had to be among the 116 members of the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions.

“The recognition by Child magazine is a testament to the dedication of the physicians, nurses and staff who on a daily basis demonstrate their commitment to putting patients first,” said Michael Apkon, M.D., Ph.D, vice president and executive director of the Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital. “Our inclusion in Child magazine speaks to the dedication and passion they convey while working to advance research and treatment of childhood illnesses at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital.”

“What distinguishes Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital is that we not only provide cutting-edge, state-of-the-art care to children in New Haven, but we are also advancing care throughout the region, through our research and education programs at the Yale School of Medicine, to make children’s lives better in the hospital and at home,” said Margaret Hostetter, M.D., Jean McLean Wallace professor and chair of the department of pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine and physician-in-chief at YNHCH.

Along with being ranked 30th among the best pediatric institutions in the country in Child magazine’s bi-annual survey, Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital is also the recipient of many other accolades that honors its focus on patient care, research and education. U.S. News & World Report has ranked Yale-New Haven’s pediatric services as among the best in the country.

Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital, opened in 1993, is Connecticut’s first comprehensive children’s hospital. YNHCH provides inpatient, outpatient, emergency, primary and preventive care and serves as one of New England’s major referral centers for diagnosis and treatment of pediatric problems including diabetes, cardiac disease, cancer, and neurologic disease. YNHCH’s specialty center offers new and innovative treatments for asthma, cancer, kidney dialysis, infectious diseases, spina bifida and inflammatory bowel disorders to name a few as well as providing care for young adults who are long-term survivors of childhood cancer or congenital heart disease. YNHCH’s minimally invasive surgery program and critical care capabilities have kept Yale-New Haven Children’s a leader in innovative therapies for childhood illness.

Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital is the only certified pediatric level-1 trauma center in Connecticut.

Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital, with 201 of Yale-New Haven’s 944 beds, offers the region’s largest and most comprehensive array of maternity and pediatric services, including newborn special care and maternal special care units, a 19-bed pediatric intensive care unit, 24-hour pediatric emergency room, pediatric surgery center and a pediatric clinical research unit.
