Children’s Hospital names Michael Apkon, M.D., Ph.D., vice president and executive director

NEW HAVEN — Michael Apkon, M.D., Ph.D., has been named to the new position of vice president and executive director for Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital. In addition to day-to-day operations and the Children’s Hospital service line, he is responsible for integrating the operating functions for all patient care and support services, as well as strategic development, clinical quality and financial performance for the Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Apkon has been affiliated with YNHH since the beginning of his pediatric residency in 1989. He is a board-certified pediatrician with subspecialty certification in pediatric critical care. He earned a B.S. in biomedical engineering from Northwestern University, his M.D. and Ph.D. in neural science from Washington University in St. Louis, and an M.B.A. from Yale School of Management. He has served as the vice chairman of pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine and the medical director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Dr. Apkon also holds faculty positions at Yale School of Medicine and Yale School of Management. Most recently, he served as vice president of performance management for Yale New Haven Health System.

YNHCH provides inpatient, outpatient, emergency, primary and preventive care and serves as one of New England’s major referral centers for diagnosis and treatment of pediatric problems including diabetes, cardiac disease, cancer, and neurologic disease.

YNHCH’s specialty center offers new and innovative treatments for asthma, cancer, kidney dialysis, infectious diseases, spina bifida and inflammatory bowel disorders to name a few as well as providing care for young adults who are long-term survivors of childhood cancer or congenital heart disease. YNHCH’s minimally invasive surgery program and critical care capabilities have kept Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital a leader in innovative therapies for childhood illness.

YNHCH is the only certified pediatric level-1 trauma center in Connecticut.

Dr. Apkon lives in Woodbridge with his wife, Michelle, and two children, Dana and Jacob.


Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital, with 201 of Yale-New Haven’s 944 beds, offers the region’s largest and most comprehensive array of maternity and pediatric services, including newborn special care and maternal special care units, a 19-bed pediatric intensive care unit, 24-hour pediatric emergency room, pediatric surgery center and a pediatric clinical research unit.
