U.S. News & World Report ranks Yale-New Haven Hospital among America’s best hospitals

NEW HAVEN, Conn. U.S .News & World Report has again designated Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) as one of the nation’s top hospitals, according to its annual “America’s Best Hospitals” listing in the July 10 issue.

Yale-New Haven Hospital was ranked among the very best in the nation in 10 of the 16 medical specialties evaluated: cancer; digestive disorders; ear, nose and throat; endocrinology; gynecology; heart and heart surgery; kidney disease; psychiatry; respiratory diseases; and urology.

Of those, Yale-New Haven’s gynecology and psychiatry services are ranked among the nation’s top 10, while digestive disorders, endocrinology, kidney diseases and urology all ranked among the nation’s top 25. Gynecology and psychiatry have been recognized for 15 consecutive years. Heart and heart surgery, gynecology and urology were ranked higher than last year.

Only 176 of the nation’s 3,000+ hospitals were on the “Best Hospitals” list. YNHH was the only Connecticut hospital to be listed. In New England, Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston was the only hospital to be ranked in more specialties (12) than YNHH.

“This recognition is a significant benchmark for Yale-New Haven Hospital as to where we are among the nation’s best healthcare providers,” said Peter Herbert, M.D., chief of staff at Yale-New Haven Hospital. “We are proud to be included among the very best in so many specialty areas over such a long period of time.”

Yale-New Haven Hospital is a primary university teaching hospital which accepts patients from throughout Connecticut, the nation and the world. Last year, the hospital treated almost 49,000 inpatients and more than 484,000 outpatients. One of the area’s largest, oldest and most stable employers with approximately 6,500 employees, Yale-New Haven Hospital is well known for its clinical excellence and patient service.

“Providing safe, high quality patient care is our primary mission at Yale-New Haven,” said Marna P. Borgstrom, President and CEO of Yale-New Haven Hospital. “Our inclusion in U.S. News is a testament not only to the quality of the care our patients receive, but how YNHH is perceived among our peers. We look forward to building on our exceptional reputation with exciting new projects such as our new cancer hospital slated to open in 2009.”
