Statement from the Yale-New Haven Hospital Board of Trustees

NEW HAVEN — The Yale-New Haven Board of Trustees released the following statement on Monday regarding the SEIU organizing campaign at Yale-New Haven Hospital:

"The Board of Trustees of Yale-New Haven Hospital deeply regrets that recent events have resulted in the postponement of the proposed election. We firmly believe that the employees of the Hospital should have the opportunity to vote in a timely manner without pressure in a fair, secret ballot election.

"Since the signing of the Election Principles Agreement, we have strongly reinforced the Hospital management's commitment to ensure that the process is fair for all employees and that the terms of the Agreement were honored.

"As a Board, we have taken, and will continue to take, an active role in ensuring that the spirit and the intent of the Agreement is followed.

"We have reviewed the Arbitrator's decision and understand that a number of meetings, while voluntary in nature, took place immediately following regular staff meetings. We met with the senior management of the Hospital and reviewed this issue with them. We fully support the Hospital's decision that immediately suspended this activity.

"The Board of Trustees will continue to monitor this process closely and act as stewards for our employees, our patients and our community."

Yale-New Haven Hospital is a 944-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving as the primary teaching hospital for the Yale School of Medicine. Yale-New Haven was founded as the fourth voluntary hospital in the U.S. in 1826 and today, the hospital complex includes Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, with a combined medical staff of about 2,400 university and community physicians practicing in more than 100 specialties.
