Hospital ranks #5 in New York magazine hospital survey

NEW HAVEN — Yale-New Haven Hospital has earned high marks from more than 1,000 physicians in the tri-state area in New York magazine’s inaugural “best hospitals” survey.

When asked, “Where would you go and why?,” the physicians ranked Yale-New Haven the overall #5 most-outstanding hospital in the New York area. New York magazine’s survey mirrors the findings of U.S. News & World Report, which issued its 17th annual “America's Best Hospitals” rankings in July.

The Nov. 20, 2006 issue of New York magazine listed Yale-New Haven Hospital among the very best hospitals in 10 specialties: cardiac care, #8; cancer, #5; digestive disorders, #4; ear, nose and throat, #6; emergency care, #9; neurology/neurosurgery, #4; ob/gyn, #5; orthopedics, #6; pediatrics, #6; and psychiatry, #6.

“Providing safe, high quality patient care is our primary mission at Yale-New Haven,” said Marna P. Borgstrom, president and CEO of Yale-New Haven Hospital. “Our inclusion in New York magazine is a tribute to the dedication of a team of healthcare professionals who on a daily basis demonstrate their commitment to putting patients first. We look forward to building on our exceptional reputation with exciting new projects such as our new cancer hospital slated to open in 2009.”

The “Best Hospitals” were chosen from a list of 199 hospitals by a random database sampling of 30,000 doctors from the tri-state area (1,000 doctors replied). Doctors were polled by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. and asked to choose their top 10 hospitals in 10 specialties based on the question, “Where would you go and why?”

In addition, the best in 15 subspecialties were selected by a team of New York magazine reporters who canvassed leading doctors in each field and asked them, “If you or a loved one were in need of this kind of care, what hospital would you choose and why?” The best hospitals reflect the physicians’ consensus choices.

Yale-New Haven Hospital is a major academic medical center hospital that accepts patient referrals and hospital transfers from throughout Connecticut, New England, the nation and the world. Yale-New Haven, one of the area’s largest, oldest and most stable employers with nearly 6,000 employees, is well known by consumers in Connecticut through their personal experience or the experience of a family member. Last year, the hospital treated nearly 47,000 inpatients and over 462,000 outpatients. Nationally, Yale-New Haven Hospital is one of 50 medical centers that collectively train nearly 40 percent of the physicians who enter practice in the United States each year.

The 944-bed hospital also serves as a major educational resource for nursing and allied health professionals and has been recognized for the past 15 years by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation’s top hospitals, according to its annual “America’s Best Hospitals” issue.

Yale-New Haven Hospital is a 944-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving as the primary teaching hospital for the Yale School of Medicine. Yale-New Haven was founded as the fourth voluntary hospital in the U.S. in 1826 and today, the hospital complex includes Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, with a combined medical staff of about 2,400 university and community physicians practicing in more than 100 specialties.
