Yale-New Haven Hospital names Richard D’Aquila as new COO

Yale-New Haven Hospital and Yale New Haven Health System announced on Tuesday that Richard D’Aquila has been appointed executive vice president and chief operating officer at Yale-New Haven Hospital and executive vice president of Yale New Haven Health System. D’Aquila, assumes his new responsibilities effective May 1.

Borgstrom. “Rick brings nearly three decades of healthcare leadership experience to our organization. His skill and exceptional background will be invaluable to realizing our goal of providing safe, high quality care to our patients while taking our position as an employer of choice to the next level.”

For the past six years, D’Aquila has served as senior vice president and chief operating officer of New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. In that role, he has been responsible for the operational management of the 1,120 bed academic medical center, including the Weill Cornell Westchester Division. During his tenure, he has led organizational strategic and facilities planning, service line planning, service line development, information technology and performance improvement.

Prior to his experience at New York Presbyterian, D’Aquila served as executive vice president and chief operating officer at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, Connecticut from 1992 to 2000. There, he also served as president and CEO of the affiliated medical subsidiaries.

D’Aquila began his career as an administrative resident at Mt. Sinai Hospital (now part of St. Francis Hospital) in Hartford, Connecticut in 1979. He gained progressively more responsibility throughout his career, serving as assistant executive director and vice president of planning and community services at Mt. Sinai, before being appointed president and CEO of Health Initiatives Corporation in Providence, Rhode Island. At Health Initiatives, D’Aquila was charged with strategic planning, business development and implementation for acute care and specialty hospitals.

D’Aquila, 50, and his wife, Kathy, have five children and reside in Newtown, Connecticut. He received his graduate degree in hospital administration from the Yale University School of Medicine and his bachelor’s degree in economics from Central Connecticut State University.
