Diagnostic Radiology

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the newest tools in diagnostic imaging. It produces detailed images of the human body without the use of X-rays. These images are created using a powerful magnet, radio waves and a computer system to process data. Procedures using MRI are painless and involve no ionizing radiation. The contrast used in MRI is not radioactive and does not contain iodine.

Due to the magnetic nature of the imaging process, a detailed medical history is taken from every patient prior to being scanned. Each outpatient is required to complete a safety screening form in order to verify the presence or absence of any potentially damaging items such as clips, sutures, tattoos, stents or other medical devices. Many of these items are not dangerous, but each must be evaluated by the MRI technologist.

MRI scans are performed with the patient lying flat on an imaging table (covered with a pad), which slides into the scanner. The scanner is shaped like a donut, and the table slides into the donut hole. Many patients are concerned about claustrophobia. The MRI department at Yale New-Haven Hospital offers the option of IV sedation and anesthesia for patients who are severely claustrophobic or have physical disabilities and cannot lie still. The physician ordering the MRI should request sedation when scheduling the appointment.

MRI scans can be as brief as 45 minutes or take as long as two hours.

Following the procedure, the images will be reviewed by a radiologist specialized in interpreting MRI and a report will be sent to the ordering physician.

NOTE - - All MRI exams and procedures are performed by prescription only. A written physician's order is required in order to schedule an appointment.

To schedule an MRI appointment, please contact Yale-New Haven Hospital Outpatient Scheduling, (203) 688-2433, and follow the system prompts.
