AIDS Care Program

The AIDS Care Program was established in 1984 in response to the increasing number of individuals being treated for HIV/AIDS at Yale-New Haven Hospital. The program provides comprehensive care to adults, adolescents and children living with HIV/AIDS and their families and significant others. The scope of services includes outreach, testing, counseling, outpatient and inpatient clinical care, clinical research trials and community support. The AIDS Care Program is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, HIV counselors, social workers and clinical researchers. For general information, please call (203) 688-3298.

Outreach
The HIV prevention counselors provide educational presentations to local schools, churches and community-based organizations. They also conduct secondary prevention and educational sessions, train providers, attend health fairs, participate in community outreach programs and participate on many communitywide committees.

HIV counseling and testing program
Our HIV counselors provide essential HIV pre- and post-test counseling as required by the Connecticut HIV Confidentiality Law. This law requires that very specific and detailed information be shared and gathered in the counseling session. We provide several testing methods for our clients as appropriate. We offer two types of test procedures — confidential or anonymous.

  • Confidential HIV testing records the person's name along with the results of his/her test. The only people with access to your test results are medical personnel and, in some states such as Connecticut, the state health department. However, your status may become known if you sign a release form to have your personal physician notified. Once this information becomes part of your medical record, even a student's medical record at a college or university, it may be seen by health care workers, insurers or employers.

  • Anonymous HIV testing means that no name is ever given to the testing center and only the person who is having the test is aware of the results

All HIV counseling and testing services are free. For information or to make an appointment, please call (203) 688-3184.

Adult clinical services
The outpatient HIV/AIDS clinic provides comprehensive, integrated services for adults with HIV/AIDS. The clinic offers HIV specialty care, primary care, psychiatry/mental health support, social work, nursing, neurology, gynecology and Hepatitis C care. The clinic also offers a number of clinical trials and other research opportunities. For information please call (203) 688-5303.

Pediatric and adolescent clinical services
The Pediatric AIDS Care clinic provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary services to children and adolescents who have acquired HIV/AIDS perinatally, sexually or through other mechanisms. The clinic, located in the Yale New Haven Hospital Pediatric Specialty clinic, offers HIV specialty care, social work and nursing care. Furthermore, because of the location, there is access to pediatric neurology, gastroenterology, cardiology and renal specialists. The clinic is staffed with nurses, nursing assistants and phlebotomists. The Pediatric AIDS Care Program offers a number of clinical trials as a member of the PACTG/IMPAACT group. For information please call (203) 688-6093.

Obstetrical care
Comprehensive high-risk obstetric services, obstetric consultation and access to National Institutes of Health-sponsored HIV prenatal clinical trials are available to women with HIV infection who are pregnant or considering pregnancy. Appointments can be made by calling (203) 785-5682.

Community support
The AIDS Care Program is well integrated within the New Haven community. We have formal and informal relationships with community-based agencies to offer the full continuum of services. These include, but are not limited to, home care, meals programs, transportation and case management.
