Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE)

The Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE) is dedicated to improving the quality, efficiency and outcomes of patient care. CORE provides information about patient care from the perspective of patients, health care professionals, the health care system and payers.

The scope of activities at CORE range from understanding the experience of a single patient to characterizing the patterns of care and outcomes throughout the state and across the country. CORE is staffed by a highly talented, multi-disciplinary team of physicians, nurses, administrators, health service researchers, statisticians, epidemiologists and health economists.

Services provided by CORE

  • Outcome evaluations based on best practice benchmarks.
  • Evaluation and dissemination of information about the effectiveness of treatments, patterns of care and outcomes of patients.
  • Comprehensive report card generation.
  • Academic career development in health care services research and medical economics.

CORE's comprehensive outcomes approach

  • Patient-perceived health outcomes (functional status, quality of life, return to work)
  • Clinical outcomes (mortality, morbidity, clinical quality indicators)
  • Costs and utilization (length of stay, costs, resource utilization)
  • Patient satisfaction (hospital, physician, overall satisfaction)

Recent CORE projects (not all-inclusive)

  • University Hospital Consortium (UHC) Diabetes Benchmarking Project
  • UHC Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Benchmarking Project
  • Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA)/Connecticut Peer Review Organization (CPRO) Cooperative Cardiovascular Project
  • UHC Trauma Accelerated Benchmarking Project

CORE and clinical pathways
The Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation has been a valuable resource in assisting with the evaluation of the 44 clinical pathways that have been developed at Yale-New Haven Hospital. CORE studies the effectiveness of each pathway and tracks variance from patient pathways that might have an impact on a patient's quality of care, resource utilization or length of stay. CORE has also recently published report cards by diagnosis related group (DRG) and by physician. These report cards have successfully changed practice patterns, resulting in decreased lengths of stay and reduced costs.
